The people who show up

At Good Company, every week of the year, our volunteers show up.

They arrive early to put the kettle on. They welcome people through the door. They notice when someone seems quieter than usual or when somebody new might need a friendly face beside them. They help turn unfamiliar rooms into places where people feel comfortable, included and part of something again.

They are a big part of the reason people keep coming back. They help someone feel confident enough to walk through the door for the first time and make our clubs feel warm, welcoming and full of conversation.

“They make people feel welcome and among friends.”

Training matters, and our volunteers take it seriously. But what they bring beyond any training is something much harder to teach: kindness, patience, warmth and a genuine interest in the people around them.

Last month, one of our amazing volunteers, Kate, brought together more than 100 members, friends and family for a special evening with The West Kent Concert Band at Crowborough Community Centre.

And what a night it was.

The programme was filled with music from stage and screen, from much loved musical favourites to big band classics, and we are fairly certain many of us left with our feet still tapping. More importantly, the room was full of conversation, laughter and connection. People stayed afterwards chatting, reconnecting and simply enjoying being together.

The evening also raised an incredible £2,000 to support Good Company’s work across Crowborough and the surrounding area.

Like many good things at Good Company, it all started with a conversation. The band generously offered their time. We said yes. And from there, a brilliant community evening took shape.

“A fantastic amount was raised to support Good Company’s work right here in our community.”

We would also like to thank the local businesses and supporters who donated raffle prizes and helped make the evening such a success:

Good Company exists to help people stay connected, confident and part of everyday life. Older adults, people living with dementia, carers, and people who may be noticing changes in confidence, memory or daily life.

None of this happens alone.

Volunteers are central to what we do. They help create the atmosphere, warmth and consistency that people return to week after week.

To celebrate Volunteers’ Week, we simply want to say thank you.

Thank you to every Host, volunteer, supporter and community partner who gives their time, energy and encouragement to Good Company. You help make Crowborough a kinder and more connected place to grow older.

And there is more to come.

We are delighted to share that The West Kent Concert Band will be returning on Saturday 20 December 2026 for another fundraising concert with Good Company.

If the last evening was anything to go by, it is going to be a wonderful way to end the year together. More details will follow soon.

Could you be a Volunteer?
