Helping someone stand up safely

Standing up from a chair sounds simple, but it is one of the everyday moments where people are most at risk of losing balance, confidence or independence.

Watch the video below:

In this short film, Lucy and Heather demonstrate a range of simple techniques that can help someone stand up safely and sit back down again with dignity and reassurance.

The film focuses on clear communication, positioning, encouragement and giving people time to move for themselves before stepping in with physical support. It also demonstrates different levels of support depending on what someone needs in the moment.

As with all Good Company films, the tone is practical, human and full of personality. Heather, who was 98 during filming, brings warmth and humour throughout and reminds us that these moments are about much more than technique alone.

Heather, who is 98 and always game for a bit of fun, was brilliant during filming and captures the spirit of these videos perfectly. We wanted the films to feel approachable and human, because supporting someone well is not about clinical perfection. It is about confidence, dignity and learning together.

The videos in this Everyday Support section of the Know-How were originally made as internal training resources for our staff and volunteers, but we are now sharing them publicly in the hope they may help carers, families and community groups too.
