Leaving a gift in your will
Thinking about the future can feel daunting, but writing a will is one of the simplest ways to take care of the people and causes you care about. It is a practical act of kindness that can continue to help others long after your lifetime.

Many people who are part of Good Company tell us that this community has given them friendship, confidence and a sense of belonging. Leaving a gift in your will is one way of keeping that feeling going for others in the years to come.

You do not need to be wealthy or have a large estate. Even a small gift can help fund community clubs, support volunteers and ensure there is always a friendly place for older people, carers and people living with dementia to turn to.
Why make a will?
A will is a legal document that sets out what you want to happen to your money, home and possessions after you die. Without a will, these decisions are made under legal rules called intestacy, which may not reflect your wishes.
Making a will can bring peace of mind and make things clearer for family and friends. It also gives you the opportunity to support the causes that matter to you.

If you decide to leave a gift in your will, you can do this in a few simple ways:
-
A fixed amount of money (known as a pecuniary gift)
-
A specific item such as jewellery or artwork
-
A percentage of whatever remains after other gifts and expenses have been paid (known as a residuary gift)
If you already have a will, you can add a short legal note called a codicil rather than rewriting the whole document. Your solicitor can help you do this safely.

How to leave a gift to The Good Company People
Wills and dementia
People often ask whether someone living with dementia can make or update a will. The answer is yes, as long as they have mental capacity at the time the will is made. This means they understand what a will is, what they own and who they want to benefit.
A diagnosis of dementia does not automatically prevent someone from making a valid will. It is sensible to seek legal advice and, if needed, a medical opinion to confirm capacity and reduce the risk of uncertainty later.

Planning ahead is about care, thought and clarity. It can give peace of mind to you and to the people around you, and help ensure the things that matter most are taken care of.
