Volunteer with us

Good Company is built on people who care. Our volunteers bring laughter to our clubs, comfort to carers and friendship to people who might otherwise be alone. Some pour tea, some play music, some give lifts, and some simply sit and listen. Every small act adds up to something that makes life better for someone else.

If you are kind, curious and enjoy being around people, we would love you to be part of it.

“The hosts are amazing. They know how to include everyone. It has been wonderful for my mother to have Good Company.”

Community matters

Volunteering with The Good Company People means being part of a community that believes connection changes lives. You will meet new people, learn new skills and know that what you do really matters.

People often tell us they love seeing someone’s confidence return over a cup of tea, being part of a friendly team, and learning more - particularly about dementia and ageing well. Many say they get as much from volunteering as the people they support.

Other opportunities

Club Hosts
Help people feel welcome and part of the fun. Chat, lend a hand with activities and make sure everyone feels included.

Volunteer Drivers
Give short lifts so people can get to clubs. A kind chat in the car often means as much as the journey itself.

Entertainers and Helpers
Bring what you enjoy. We always welcome people who can share music, art, gardening, games or a good laugh.

Community Fundraising Volunteers
If you enjoy connecting with people or planning local events, this is a great way to get involved. You might host a coffee morning, a quiz night or a sponsored walk, or help a local group choose Good Company as their charity of the year.

“I have always needed to be surrounded by friends, and the idea that people live in loneliness is heartbreaking. Good Company means everything to me.”

Things you need to know

  • Training and support: You will receive an introduction to Good Company, safeguarding, dementia awareness and role specific guidance. There is regular supervision and space to ask questions and share ideas.

  • Time: Most roles need between 3 and 4 hours a month. Some clubs like Lunch Club need more. We will work with you to find the right fit.

  • Expenses: We cover agreed out of pocket costs such as mileage.

  • Checks: We follow safer volunteering practice. This may include references and a DBS check where needed.

  • Accessibility: Please tell us what you need to volunteer comfortably. We will do our best to make it work.

Training with Good Company

Every volunteer at Good Company receives friendly and practical training before getting started. It is not about ticking boxes or passing tests. It is about feeling ready, confident and supported in real situations.

Our sessions are led in person by our dementia lead, Sue Hinds, and shaped by the experiences of members and volunteers. We focus on what really matters: listening well, building trust, noticing changes and responding with warmth and skill.

Training continues throughout the year. We keep learning together through short workshops, reflective sessions and team get togethers. Many people say it helps them feel part of something bigger and more connected, ready and supported to help others.
