Caring for someone with dementia is an act of love—and it’s also really hard. The long days, the emotional ups and downs, the changes in your relationship, and the feeling that life has shrunk can take their toll. It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed, low, or like you’ve lost a part of yourself in the process.
That’s why Dementia Carers Count offers something simple but powerful: up to six free counselling sessions for anyone who’s looking after someone with dementia.
You don’t need a diagnosis of anything. You don’t need to hit a breaking point. You just need to be a carer—formal or informal—who could use a bit of space to talk, reflect, and breathe.
Counselling can help with:
feelings of guilt, grief or loss, especially as the person you care for changes
building resilience and coping tools for when things feel too much
managing that constant sense of overwhelm, and finding ways to look after yourself too
The wait time is currently around 2–4 weeks from first call to your first appointment -not instant, but a lot quicker than many other services out there. And it's all over the phone or video, so you don’t need to leave home or rearrange everything to get support.
If you think this might be for you -or you're just curious - call one of Dementia Carers Count's friendly advisors for a free, no-pressure chat on 0800 652 1102, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm.
Or check out more details online at dementiacarers.org.uk.
You look after someone else every day. Let someone look after you, too.
