Food has been at the heart of Good Company from the very beginning. Our first dining experience back in May 2022 was a simple idea: bring people together for fish and chips and a good old sing along to the classics. More than thirty guests came along, filled their plates and sang their hearts out to South Pacific, The King and I, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music and Oliver. The verdict was clear. People wanted more evenings like this. Supper Club was born.
More than three years on, Supper Club is still going strong. We now have two regular groups. Monday evenings at The Artful Grocers in Wadhurst and Wednesday evenings at the Blue Anchor in Crowborough. Both are full of food, music and laughter. They show that when you put those ingredients together, something magical happens.
At Good Company almost everything we do involves food in some way. There is something about breaking bread together that makes people relax, talk and connect. A shared meal becomes a ritual. Whether it is a sandwich after a walk, a slice of cake at Games Club or fish and chips at Supper Club, food brings us together in a way nothing else can.
Food also matters for another reason. Nutrition is a vital part of staying well as we grow older and for people living with dementia. It might not seem that way when we talk about pub lunches, bacon butties or cake, but our choices are deliberate. We use food that is familiar, comforting and easy to enjoy. It helps people feel at home and gives confidence to join in. Once the table is set and everyone is together, the real nourishment comes not just from the meal but from the friendship and conversation that surrounds it.
And food is never on its own. It sits alongside music that gets toes tapping, movement that is gentle and fun, and activities that spark conversation and laughter. Together they make up the recipe for Good Company.
🍴 What’s on the Good Company menu?
Bacon or egg rolls with a cuppa at Games Club
Fish and chips at Supper Club
Cake and coffee at Lunch Club
A sniff and a swill of wine or gin at Saturday Company Club
Fresh air and a biscuit on our Thursday walks
Served with a side of laughter and a big helping of friendship, they are what make Good Company feel like home.
