If you or someone close to you has been told they have dementia, it can feel like a lot to take in. That is why we want to share a free guide called My Choice that the Memory Service give out to people who have had a diagnosis.
It is full of simple ideas that can help you live well. The guide was written with advice from doctors, researchers and people who are living with dementia themselves. It gives clear tips about staying healthy, keeping your brain active and making everyday life easier.

What is in the guide?
The guide is split into short sections. Each one gives tips you can try at your own pace. It also uses easy symbols to show how strong the evidence is behind each idea.
Here are some of the topics it covers:
Eating well Some foods are better for the brain than others. The guide talks about simple ways to eat more fruit, vegetables, fish and healthy fats. It also gives ideas for snacks and how to stay hydrated if you forget to drink during the day.
Moving your body You do not need to join a gym. Just walking, doing a bit of housework or gentle stretching can help your body and your mood. A little bit of movement every day makes a big difference.
Keeping your brain busy Doing crosswords, playing games or learning something new can help your memory and focus. Even small things like doing puzzles or chatting with someone can help keep your mind active.
Spending time with others The guide explains why staying social is just as important as medicine. You might go to a club, join a walk or phone a friend. These small moments can lift your mood and help you feel more connected.
Planning ahead There is a helpful section about making decisions for the future. That includes things like Power of Attorney, health choices and money. You do not have to do everything at once. The guide shows how to take it step by step.
Looking after how you feel It is common to feel worried or low after a diagnosis. The guide explains why this happens and what can help. It includes tips for feeling more like yourself and where to get support if things feel too much.
Why we recommend it
The guide is called My Choice because it puts you in control. It is not about telling people what to do. It is about giving you ideas so you can choose what feels right for you.
We think it is one of the most useful guides for people living with dementia, and also for carers, family members and support workers.
If you would like to read it, you can download it from the link below r we can give you a copy or talk through it with you.
