When I was first offered a home safety visit from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, I almost said no. I thought it would all be common sense. After all, how complicated could fire safety be?
As it turns out, it was one of the most worthwhile things I have done. A home visit is personal. It focuses on your home, your routines and the needs of the people who live there. I felt so much better afterwards, and I now encourage others to do the same.
Here are five reasons I think we should all say yes.
1. You don’t know what you don’t know
Even the most careful among us miss things we have grown used to: loose wiring behind furniture, clutter near heaters, smoke alarms that have quietly stopped working, or plugs that stay on overnight.T he ESFRS team has a trained eye for these details. They notice what we do not.
2. It’s free
The visit itself is completely free. If something simple needs installing, such as a smoke alarm, the team provide it either free of charge. It is one of the easiest ways to make meaningful improvements to your home safety.
3. Personalised advice and a practical escape plan
This is not a one-size-fits-all service. Firefighters walk through your home with you, ask about your routines, and look carefully at the layout and structure of your home. They offer personalised recommendations and help you create an escape plan that is realistic for you. This includes identifying key exits, safe spots and where to keep keys.Small details can save valuable seconds in an emergency.
4. Support for people with additional needs
If anyone in your home has mobility, memory, hearing or vision challenges, their risk in an emergency may be higher. The team can suggest adaptations such as specialist alarms, clearer escape routes or simple environmental changes that make a real and sometimes life-saving difference.
5. Peace of mind for you and your family
Once you have made a few simple improvements, the sense of reassurance is real. It feels good to know your home has been checked by professionals and is as safe as it can be.
How to book a visit
You can book a home safety visit by filling in the online form or calling 0800 1777069.
I also found the Home Fire Safety booklet helpful, as it allowed me to ask more detailed questions when the firefighters came.
Stay safe, and please consider booking a visit. It is quick, free and genuinely worthwhile.
