Getting in and out of a car safely

Getting in and out of a car can seem like a small everyday task, but for many people it can become one of the moments where confidence, balance and coordination are most tested.

Watch the video below:

A slope, a rushed movement or pulling someone the wrong way can quickly turn something ordinary into something stressful or unsafe.

In this short film, Lucy and Heather demonstrate some simple techniques we use at The Good Company People to support someone safely while still allowing them to do as much as possible for themselves.

The film includes practical guidance around positioning, communication, supporting someone’s legs safely, and using simple equipment such as a handy bar to make transfers steadier and more comfortable.

As always with Good Company, the film also has a sense of humour running through it. Heather, who was 98 during filming, keeps Lucy firmly on her toes throughout.

The videos in this Everyday Support section of the Know-How were originally made as internal training resources for our staff and volunteers, but we are now sharing them publicly in the hope they may help carers, families and community groups too.
