Our story

When my Mum Hazel was going through the process of getting a dementia diagnosis she did not want to be in a group with other people who were ‘further on’ as she found it distressing and depressing seeing what her future could look like.

She was also someone who wanted to continue to live her life doing the things she loved which was why we set up The Good Company People.

We carefully curate experiences based on every person to help to continue to do what they love, in familiar places with people who are in similar situations.

Our approach

“In modern life we so often over complicate things but behind The Good Company People is a perfectly simple (and simply perfect) concept. That time spent with friendly people is good for us.

This is no wild claim; the scientific evidence fully supports it – chatting with friends, building strong supportive relationships, sharing interests and passions all deliver positive emotional, mental and physical health outcomes.”

Our values

We don't just talk about our values, we live them and breathe them.

A kind core

This is how our members describe everyone who is part of Good Company. We are lucky to have a team of staff and volunteers who are passionate and committed to our mission to help older adults live happier, healthier and independent lives and epitomise ‘Good Company’.

We depend on people who have the time to put their wisdom, life experience, and passion into getting Good Company on everyone’s doorsteps.

Curiosity

We never stop listening, learning and trying out new ways to enjoy Good Company. We start with a ‘getting to know you’ session to discover what people like doing, where they like doing it and who they like doing it with.

We launch Clubs based on member’s hobbies and interests from games to singing to walking to wine tasting. We’d love to launch more to meet the growing demand… but need more people to join our team to volunteer their time and share their hobbies.

Co-creation

Everyone involved in Good Company is part of its co-creation. Our team of staff and volunteers meet every month to share what worked, what we need to do more of, less of and how we can best meet the changing needs of our members.

Our member-led lived experience panel are the experts and the driving force behind shaping Good Company – in the last session they asked for a place to drop in to when they need a little extra support – so together we are piloting a pop up at Chappells pharmacy on Crowborough high street.

Being normal

I think this is one of the best compliments we’ve had from a member who cares for her husband who is living with dementia. They come to The Tuesday Lunch Club, in a pub and for 4 hours she feels like she is enjoying a meal with her husband amongst friends and not his carer.

No one size fits all

When my Mum Hazel was going through the process of getting a dementia diagnosis she did not want to be in a group with other people who were ‘further on’ as she found it distressing and depressing seeing what her future could look like.

She was also someone who wanted to continue to live her life doing the things she loved which was why we set up The Good Company People. We carefully curate experiences based on every person to help to continue to do what they love, in familiar places with people who are in similar situations.
